Thank you to those who have turned in the permission slips for our field trip to Bonneville. All chaperone spots have been filled. We leave at 8:45 on Friday, Oct. 4th. I will put up more information on the blog about the trip later this week, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

We have been exploring physical models of multiplication and division using tiles to help us visualize those concepts. We will be adding area and perimeter to the mix either later this week or early next week. We worked on figuring out the factors of 1-12, then jumped up to some higher numbers. We also looked at whether numbers are prime or composite. These are important concepts and this week’s homework lets your child practice some of the things we are working on in class.

We got a quick start on our geography unit on Friday afternoon. The class learned that oregon and Washington are considered part of the Pacific Northwest, but California is added when we are talking about the Pacific Coast states. We will continue this week with an in-depth exploration of the geography of our great state.

At the very end of the week we invited Ms. Speer’s 5th-grade class in to sing some songs with us and that was a lot of fun. I think “The Crawdad Song,” (“You get a line and I’ll get a pole, honey. . .”) was the group’s favorite, but the chant song “Vista” ran a pretty close second.

I am introducing SpellingCity this week as an additional way to study the weekly spelling words. There are some fun games and activities on the website. Most students can access this by clicking on the link and logging in using their IXL username and password, but a few students have different usernames due to duplicate names on SpellingCity. I hope to use this site to customize spelling lists a little later in the year.

Neatness counts on homework (and classwork, too!). Please encourage your child to work as neatly as possible. Homework this week includes the spelling and math worksheets and reading for 30 minutes each night.
